3:10 to yuma

3:10 to Yuma (1957) has one of the greatest lines: “My own grandmother fought the Indians for sixty years then chocked to death on lemon pie.”

(DVD)

star3 Verdict: A much better film than the 2007 version, which was more comedy than anything else.

Cruising (William Friedkin, 1980): USA, West Germany

crusing

Cruising (1980) could have been a straight forward film about under-cover detective work in the gay subculture of the late-1970s/early-1980s, but it becomes something much more interesting by the end of the film — what has happenend to Al Pacino’s character? And, is it as straight as one might assume? Fantastic idea — some problems with the execution, but overall a worthwhile films which took quite a few risks.

star4 Verdict: Unusaul film, with quite a twist at the end.

star3 Verdict: Not bad, some interesting moments, but not great — not as heavy-handed as as Crash, but still there are momens that lack subtlety.

Der Siebente Kontinent (The Seventh Continent, Michael Haneke, 1989)

seventh continent

The Seventh Continent’s (1989) form, desgin, and style are what is most intriging and fascinating about this film — yes, the story engages to some extent. But the depressiing subject and the clear attack on middle-class families becomes somewhat heavy handed and not so stimulating.
The form, design, repetitions, and the cinematography are excellent in giving information to the audience.
