Vanishing Point (Richard Sarafian, 1971)
Now here is an excellent film — a film that appears to be just about a car chase but that is much more interesting than that. The car, the people, the trance like rhythm of the film and the main character — the slowly panning camera as it composes skies, bulldozers, small towns — and the tragic ending. By the end of the film, as Kowalski races towards the roadblock, I asked myself: Wouldn’t it be amazing if he just drove into the road block and that was the end of the film? And that was it.
